Despite a three point basket at the end of regulation by Sarah Hewitt to send the game into overtime, the Lady Wildcats could only manage one point in the extra period and lost to North Miami 58-47. “Sarah hit a huge basket at the end of the game,” said head coach Dr. Rick Bragg, “but we did not make good decisions in the overtime and could not rebound with North Miami throughout the game which really was the difference.” North Miami dominated the boards, scoring 20 points on second chance attempts. “We worked all week on rebounding as we knew North MIami was a great rebounding team. I was disappointed with how many offensive rebounds we gave to them,” Bragg said. North Miami jumped out to an 18-11 lead after one quarter, thanks in large part to second chance baskets. Whitko closed the gap to 25-19 at the half and narrowed the deficit to 35-33 heading into the final quarter. “As a credit to our grit and determination, we kept battling and did not give up,” Bragg proudly proclaimed. Whitko would gain the lead midway through the fourth quarter and led 43-40 with just over two minutes left in the game. “We had our chances but turned the ball over on two straight possessions. We then proceeded to allow a couple of offensive rebound baskets and a couple free throws and all of a sudden we are down 46-43,” the head coach stated. “Sarah’s big basket gave us a chance but we really struggled in the overtime.” Ellie Snep led the Whitko effort with 17 points and 18 rebounds. Sarah Hewitt added 12 points, Emalee Duggins chipped in with 11. Kayla Schipper had six points, and Elizabeth Miller made a free throw. “This was a tough loss,” Bragg said. “I want our team to understand that we expect to win these type of games. We will grow from this tough lesson.” The Lady Wildcats travel to Manchester for another TRC match up Friday, December 7.
